This book uses examples for it's concepts, such as Tiger Wood's golf game and Alice in Wonderland. It also has diagrams, definitions, graphs, tables, and mini-experiments to back up and sum up the text. In short, it is set up well for any type of learner. The text covers many areas of psychology, including the history, the brain, sense and perception, consciousness, learning, emotion, and disorders. I would definitely recommend it for a class or an ambitious solo reader. ... Because there are so many book reviews of " The Prophet ", there must be some indwelling need for all of us willing to add a book review, to do so for no other reason than to share our admiration and respect for Kahlil Gibran. This is because to hold this book in your hands and absorb the reverberating depth of Gibran, is to realize that there truly is a divinity within mankind and these are the transcendent words of someone who wrote with his soul. Perhaps the vast number of reviews written, and those so frequently written, will encourage someone who has not yet obtained their own copy to do so. This book is comprised of twenty-eight chapters that reach to the essence of who we are as human beings. Composed as a story about a prophet (or mystic, if you prefer that word) who has lived homeless in a fictional city and is preparing to leave its shores and never return. Each chapter illustrates his departing words to the people as they gather around him to bid him a final farewell. The time period, although unimportant to the material, is not modern. Each chapter addresses certain topics such as: Beauty, Death, Freedom, Pleasure, and Love. 4 stars (A deeply moving meditation on hope and despair) - Elie Wiesel's THE TIME OF THE UPROOTED shouldn't work. With its sudden shifts in point of view, disturbingly eloquent children, truncated storylines and generally convoluted, if scanty, plot, the book should be a disappointment. But the Nobel Prize winner's meditation on despair and hope in the face of both the unthinkable and the mundane is deeply moving. Wiesel (and his translator, David Hapgood) skillfully controls the mood of the work, immersing the reader in the sadness of Gamaliel Friedman, a man whose life has been a series of struggles. A childhood spent in hiding from the Nazis and an adulthood spent in unhappy romances have left Gamaliel irreparably harmed. Spiritual issues are pervasive in this book. A ghostwriter, Gamaliel is at work on a story of his own centered on a conflict between a rabbi and a priest. He is also enamored of a rabbi seeking to force the arrival of the Messiah. And he is preoccupied with a woman, near death, who he imagines might be the woman who protected him as a child. Each interlocking piece of his life adds heft to the book's spiritual themes. Gamaliel's relationships with women, central to the story, are almost cursorily described. Each seems a rich vein of material that Wiesel barely mines. Indeed, the same could be said of many of the plot points. THE TIME OF THE UPROOTED often feels like a slimmed down version of a potentially more ornately layered tale.
