5 stars (Amazing book) - This book is an exquisitely done companion book to the exhibit. Every piece from the exhibit is highlighted in the book, with an appropriate discription and background. If you enjoy Ancient Egypt, get this book, whether you have the chance to see the exhibit or not. It's a great companion to the exhibit if you can see it, but a great substitute if you can't. 5 stars (Beautiful Photographs from the National Geographic.) - This magnificant book is the companion book to go with the Tutankhamun exhibition that is currently touring the United States. It features the magnificant photography for which National Geographic is famous complete with a narative written by Zahi Hawass, the secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and director of the Giza and Saqqara Pyramids. In the descriptions, he talks about the life of the boy king, the state of Egypt at the time, the religion and much more. Each piece of the exhibit is discussed as to what it is, what significance it has, and where it was found. Perhaps most striking is the reconstructed image of Tutankhamun. It was made by a special CT scanner that obtained images from inside the mummy's wrappings without damaging them. This created the first three-dimensional picture of Tutankhamun. The exhibit will show in LA, June 16 to November 15, 2005, Ft. Feinberg presents various philosophical topics in an organized manner and selects text that is easy to understand for readers new to philosophy. Readers are weaned into the language of philosophy by first being presented with the jargon in the beginning of each section. It's a great book that covers a variety of topics, from arguments about God's existence to ethics to abortion. 5 stars (Great Anthology) - It is unclear whether my previous attempt to write a review of this book went through or not. If not, here goes again: A disclaimer: I have absolutely no connection with the authors or publishers and stand to benefit in no way from the sale of this book. My background: MA in philosophy and have taught as a teaching assistant on a number of philosophy courses at university level. Review: This is the best anthology of philosophical writing that I am aware of. It's strength lies in the range of readings it includes. The editors have, it seems, stayed very involved with their book and update the readings every few years. As a result this anthology includes some very recent material in addition to the classics. so, the reader has available to him/her a collection of writings that span nearly 2,500 years of Western philosophy. Note: it is an anthology of philosophy in the western tradition. A second notable strength of Reason and Responsibility is the introductory essays that appear at the start of each section. These are clear and especially helpful to those new to philosophy. It is also noteworthy that the editors have attempted to compile readings that give the reader a sense of the two sides to any given debate. This is not always the case with anthologies. 2 stars (A Pastor) - I'm not opposed to allowing natural consequences to teach children when it is practical; however, this book seems to take this approach to the extreme (see other reviews for examples). While the book is repleat with religious references, the approach seems to be based on Adlerian concepts rather than Christian. Natural consequences should not always be trusted to teach higher principles of empathy, justice, and mercy; values I want my children to embrace. Often, good people must invervene to protect the weak and capable people must look after the disadvantaged. You will likely find a handful of good suggestions in this book but use with caution. For the detached, emotionally unhealthy parent, it could be a powder keg. Boundaries with Kids, in my view, is a more balanced approach. 1 stars (Lots of BAD advice -- some good advice) - While the authors have some good ideas, others are atrocious! They advocate withholding food from kids until they get their chores done. Would they also advocate letting kids go out improperly clothed or withhold shelter? Sure, they can't have dessert, but no food at all? Step over, Joan Crawford. They say if the kids aren't responsible enough to feed the pets they said they would take care of, then get rid of the pets. Animal shelters are full of pets that are the victims of such irresponsible behavior by parents. Of course the kids won't take care of the pets properly. They are kids. Animals are living, breathing, feeling creatures. They should not be pawns in teaching children how to be responsible. All too often these poor animals are mistreated and abused because of the resentment of parents or children.
