4 stars (Can't we all just get along!) - This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc. Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area. To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases. Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this. 4 stars (Better tool for self understanding than controlling others) - Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate le... 5 stars (Review of Law in Medicine) - Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances. It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization. He has taken a topic that it difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading. Students will find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts. 4 stars (Great information for those new to health care law.) - This book was very useful to me. I am a health information management student planning to enter a graduate health administration program. I took the class and this particular book was the text. Our instructor is a lawyer and runs risk management at our university hospital. The text further explained basic legal priciples and related them to health care. The text is easy to read and gives several references to actual documents. ... 3 stars (Some good ideas, but not the best.) - This is a good book, but it is not one of the best. Get copies of Kotter, Schein, Beitler, or Collins' books. 5 stars (An Excellent How To Guide on Managing/Creating Change.) - I found the book to be extremely informative. Douglas Smith has done a masterfull job of creating a step by step guide for the process of both Creating and Managing Change in any organization. He also points out why many Change Efforts fail. The 10 step guide that he has created should help us all avoid the common pitfalls of this process and help greatly improve our odds of success. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is either thinking about starting a change effort or currently in the midst of one now. 5 stars (The best hand-on book about Change Management available.) - This is clearly the best book about the practical side of Change Management I've read so far (and I've read more then 20 by now). This book really helps me in my day-to-day work as a Change Manager. Smith has closed a big gap in the Change Management literature, this is the most practical book you can look for! Highly recommended. ... 1 stars (Excessive examples, choppy writing, poor proofreading) - The book provides useful diagnostic tools and challenging activities and case studies. However, the writing style of the author is poor and very choppy, making it difficult to follow the material. The author uses an excessive amount of real-world examples, but does little justice to covering and explaining the theory and concepts of the subject material. I purchased a used 7th edition of this text book through Amazon.com. The pervious owner of my book (a student, I assume) noted several errors in the book. For example, in Chapter 3, "The Diverse Workforce:...", page 81, heading "INDIVIDUAL VALUES AND ATTITUDES", subheading "Values", paragraph 2, sentence 1, the published text states: "Core values are more susceptible to change, and peripheral values are less susceptible (to change)." However, the sentence in my text book was manually corrected by the previous owner (at the direction of an instructor at another educational institution, I assume) to read: "Core values are less susceptible to change, and peripheral values are more susceptible (to change)." When I first read the sentence, I could not agree with what the author had stated. So I did a search on Google.com and verified from other sources that the author had incorrectly stated this premise. In Chapter 9, Activity 9-5 Behavior Description Questionnaire, page 319, the book provides a table for scoring a 30 statement behavior questionnaire. The activity requires one to select between an A or B statement which is characteristic of their own behavior. However, item number 6 in the scoring table shows two A answers, and item number 7 in the scoring table shows two B answers, making it impossible to obtain an accurate assessment of one's behavior pattern, unless one is able to clearly understand the subject material and correct the scoring table. These are just a few of the errors noted in the 7th edition of this publication. It appears the ... 2 stars (Management of Organizational Behavior) - Not too bad as these books go but a tremendous amount of verbiage explaining the obvious. Excellent example of turning simple concepts in complex charts and definitions. I would imagine that people in the field love this hyperbole but it's BS to me and pretty much a waste of time to drudge though all of it. 5 stars (Management of Organizational Behavior: Leading Human Resourc) - Used by over 1 million students worldwide, this book provides a comprehensive examination of the applied behavioural sciences, and focuses on fundamental ideas which have stood the test of years of application in different environments. 5 stars (Goes where few texts dare to go: the real-world) - I recommend this to managers as much as students. Sure, the price seems like a lot of cash to shell out at first. But trust me, it is worth it. I had to read it for a Management class, and it started of like a typical OB text, illustrating the history of management studies (Taylor to Maslow to Mayo to Likert to ...). Good stuff, but pretty dull. Then, Hersey et al went where most scholars, even the supposedly worldly MBA types, fear to tread: real-world application! The text covers all of the material covered Blanchard's "One Minute Manager," "Putting the One Minute Manager to Work," and a shelf load of other books. It also does a great job introducing Blanchard and Hersey's Situational Leadership, where the manager matches leadership behavior to a report's ability level and motivation. This replaces "Leadership and the One Minute Manager," and delves much deeper into the topic. Hersey et al also cover: - Behavioral shaping, and positive and negative reinforcement quite nicely - Communications skills necessary to lead reports - Power building, and using effective power bases ... - The list literally goes on and on. I use the concepts I was first exposed to here day in and day out. They work. My OB professor told us that, if he would be limited to just... 2 stars (Very basic stuff and NO PIZAZZ at all...) - I was very disappointed with this book. I am a speaker and this book will not help me much. The basic message of the book: the audience must be involved so it learns. No kidding!? This book was "presenting with pizazz" and NOT "tricks to become a better trainer"!!! The title is completely misleading, since I didn't learn how to add any creativity, showbiz or "pizazz" to my presentations! In fact, being known for my surprising presentations, I will really think about writing this book myself, as it was meant to be. I do not recommend this book since it contains only minimal content. 4 stars (Great Tips!) - Almost every book on presentation commanded at least a few hundred pages of text, so you could imagine my sceptism when I bought this book. I am glad to say that I have not regretted this purchase. :) You realise that this book is a no-nonsense, straight to the point tip book, the moment you flip to the content page. The elaborations are concise and punchy. You don't have to mull through numerous pages of boring academia but you get very useful tips. Sharon Bowman is quite obviously an old hand at training. What I also loved were the punchy and witty little words of wisdom that Sharon Bowman boxed up in various parts of the book. It made lots of common sense when you read them, and of course, served to tickle your funny bones. My only reservation about this book is that while the tips are great, its suggested games/pair shares do not seem very useful for most situations - to some extent, these pair shares can seem rather common and boring. Nevertheless, I would take this with a pinch of salt, and rather use these suggested games/pair shares not as the hard and fast model answers, nor as templates, but more as suggested examples. Ultimately any game can become boring and mundane if too many people keep repeating it in different trainings. Your job as a trainer is to make sure this doesn't happen, and that creativi... 5 stars (Must read book) - For me this book had a great value. I used it on a college course after having faced the experience of being working on an IT company for 8 months. Actually I would say this book doesn't say anything anyone could not come up with; but I think that's as phylosofy is, common things we are used to, but that hardly we note to be able to do something about. I think this book is being very useful for me even after almost 3 years of be working, I think it helps you understand most of those frustrating situations we have to face daily on a company, allowing us to feel better on our work enviroment, be better partners on work, and make our work a little more productive. Definitly I recommend this book. 3 stars (Common sense in a bound volume) - This book discusses a topic that is a grab bag of different disciplines and has nice illustrations but i dont know if it is worth close to $100. Anyone who has significant work history intuitively knows a bulk of the material in this book. The book could be condensed to include the hard data and scientific findings and leave out much of the intuitively obvious commentary. This book is no worse than scores of similar textbooks on 'soft'topics but with the way prices are going many students are captive buyers, forced to buy textbooks at the teacher's request for perhaps questions used in the book for grading purposes while the general info can readily be found in college libraries. 3 stars (Scholar's choice) - The book may be a good choice for a scholar of OB. If you are a graduate student like I am, you may find it difficult to follow and overloaded with scientific terms. To my mind, the simpler the better, which this book is not. ... 5 stars (Well organized and synthetic) - This book contains the basic principles that any HR or General Manager (especially in the US) is supposed to know. I have been using this textbook as a guide for my MBA studies. I found it very useful in that it clearly explains and organizes almost every important topic about HR management. It gives practical clues on the kind of considerations a manager needs to be aware in day-to-day operation. I used this book to find basic, straightforward ideas about HR principles and how this function is changing in the era of globalization. This way, I could use it to organize my own ideas, and if needed, using the enclosed bibliography, I could go to more specialized books on a particular topic of interest. 4 stars (Good. Thank you for investing so much of yourselves in a book that is sure to be a hit with managers everywhere. 5 stars (Beverly Kaye Does It Again) - Beverly Kaye Does It Again! Her classic book is back, updated, and still and always the single best book ever written on the subject of employee retention and engagement. Truly outstanding work! 5 stars (Wow, is this ever timely!) - All I keep hearing about is this new talent war ... people want to leave their jobs, they're not giving their effort, the boomers are leaving, the X'ers aren't staying. In the meantime, businesses are starting to pick up and it's obvious we're not going to have the right people available to do what's needed. So out comes this book ... makes sense? What's even better is it's simple. There's tons of to-do's and tips to keep people. If we don't start doing these common sense things, we don't stand a chance. 3 stars (Perfect Phrases for Performance Reviews .... Not!) - The background to giving appraisals is very good, as is the advice on how to conduct an interview. For this alone the book is worth purchasing. Included within this book are many pages of "perfect phrases". To state they are perfect is, I feel, a little misleading. Although I must mention that at the start of the book it is stated that these sentences should be altered to suit the individual. My gripe is that the sentences have not been rated very well. For example, on page 41 under Accuracy, Outstanding options provides you with "Mistakes don't slip through" as one of the choices. Should that not read, "Exceptionally accurate at all times". Many of the sentences are very weak and fail to use any "power words" to strengthen an employee's qualities. My feelings are that the book has been thrown together from previous appraisals with little though to the content of the phrases. The "sentences" require regrading and stronger words added to give them more bite. Also other attributes need to be added to give the book a wider audience such as: Loyalty, Sense of Duty, Competence, Confidence but to name a few. 5 stars (Phrases and a lot more) - Doing performance reviews--preparing for them, filling out the form, and understanding how to make them effectively improve an employee's performance--can be a challenging task. How do you make it a positive experience, for yourself and for the employee? It's not easy. How do you let the person know he or she is not living up to the organization's expectations? Again, not easy. This book can help in doing these things. The majority of book is given over to phrases you can use in over 70 different categories of performance. Each category has five levels of phrases, from outstanding to unacceptable. Even if some phrases don't fit exactly what you're looking for, you have a place to start and you can easily modify them to fit your purposes. I also like the first part of the b... 1 stars (If you want to become a great boss, don't read this) - Fox uniquely attempts to give suggestions on how to keep the best employees. Fox divides his book into fifty short stories that sometimes include a real life situation. Many of his anecdotes have serious flaws in the basic principles of Organizational Behavior, while others do not fully explain how to handle potential problems. There are instances where his suggestions can be very useful in becoming a good manager. At other times, his stories have good concepts, but do have loopholes. If you were interested in only seeing a small picture of the steps to becoming a great manager, then I would recommend this book to you. Fo'xs numerous weaknesses on motivation make me believe that he does not understand some of the basic concepts of motivation. Furthermore, his continual discussion of avoiding mishires, without any description on how to do that, further weakens his arguments. I believe this book is for more experienced managers and educated employees who know to extrapolate the good ideas in the book, and ignore the bad. 2 stars (Very General ) - These are the basics... Some mangers probably need this but I would like to think that most are beyond this kind of general and obvious information. I got this book on CD and it was boring, I hate to imagine what it would be like to have read it. I recomend Primal Leadership. 1 stars (Not the least bit helpful) - I normally don't write reviews but I just read this book and I couldn't believe how much of a waste of money it was.
