5 stars (Good AP Textbook) - My senior AP Literature and Composition class is using this book as a textbook, and I would have to say it is the best high school English book I've ever used. The questions following each included piece really helps you to focus on what is important in the passage, and the introductions to each chapter are brief and to the point. 4 stars (Almost a great resource (that I'd give 3.5 Stars, actually)) - My first exposure to Sound and Sense was in high school, and, at the time, I found the book so valuable a resource that I later purchased a copy. Post-college, my views have changed somewhat. If the tone of the writing was not so condescending, this could be a great book. It defines most of the terms necessary to understand critical texts on poetry, including those analyses related to meter, style, and tone. I find the questions after each poem to be helpful and thought-provoking. That said, it is frustrating to me that the author presents ideas and arguments in absolutes (must, must not, never, always, etc.) and then asserts that the logic that MUST be applied to point A CANNOT be applied to point B (but maybe I have spent too many hours working with lawyers). My suggestion would be to read the text with a grain of salt. Glean the terminology, answer the questions posed at the end of each poem, follow their suggestions of rereading and considering the many facets of poetry, and try to overlook the condescending manner in which the authors display their opinions as fact. 4 stars (a little at a time) - I've been nibbling away at a 20 year old edition of this book for a few years in my spare time, and almost every bite has increased my abitity to appreciate poetry. I like the examples, most of them seem pretty old, Frost is about as modern as he gets, but thats ok with me. You might find this book a little annoying if it was required reading in a course, sometimes it asks more questions than it answers. ... 5 stars (Review?) - This is not a review - but I have a question. DOESN'T ANYBODY WHO REVIEWS AT AMAZON KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REVIEW AND AN OPINION????? I get utterly frustrated at all of your opinions and I still don't know what's IN the book most of the time. Go read up on how to REVIEW a book before you enter stuff here and waste our time! 2 stars (Are YOU ready to write mediocre *blah* fiction?) - First let me say that I am not a mean person. I am sure Ms. Burroway is doing her best to teach people how to write here. And look, the book is popular, and it's sold a lot of copies so that's something, right? Well, popularity is not enough for me. And I would hope it's not enough for other smart consumers too -- professors and students alike. This book shares a virtue in common with many other fine American textbooks these days -- it takes up a lot of space to say disappointingly little. It's structured thusly: The author covers all the elements of fiction, one after the other, in a very cursory manner, interspersing between her thoughts a few mildly inspiring, mildly relevant quotes from a few "Important Writers." Now the author's commentary on the elements of fiction is why I bought the book. I wanted to know about the elements of fiction and how I can use and fuse them to help me build legendary, immaculate fiction. Some of the commentary here, though not so original, is helpful. The author has clearly read up on the topic, and she doesn't do a terrible job distilling the basics. But each chapter left me wanting. These mini-essays are sparse, folks, sparse, and they won't get you past Fiction Writing 101. After each fiction element is discussed, the author then presents a selection of short stories which feature the techniques discussed. Theory in practice. Not such a bad idea -- in theory. But in practice, this idea doesn't work so well, because the author's taste for fiction is generally (excuse me) mundane, to put it kindly. ... 5 stars (One of the best English textbooks) - I am currently using this textbook in my AP English Literature class and this is one of the best English text books that I have used so far. It really provides numerous poetry (famous and not-famous) with in-depth questions that I find very helpful for me to study 4 stars (Perrine's Literature : Structure, Sound, and Sense) - Read this book for Freshman English in high school. nice alternative to a textbook. Wouldn't really want to read this outside of class. 5 stars (Excellent) - I have this book for a college level English class, and I absolutely love it! The best part about it is the depth and quality of its selection of poems and stories. I found it to be a comprehensive collection of the best that literature has to offer. ... 5 stars (A Great game for FPS and WWII buffs) - This game was amazing. The action was top notch graphics were stunning and they had great missions. It couldnt get much better. GREAT BUY! 4 stars (Awesome, BUT...) - Call OF Duty and it's Expansion (United Offensive) are truly great games... if you've never seen a war movie in your life. It has GREAT effects, low hardware requierments, great gameplay... but the story seems like it's pieced together from WW2 movies like "Saving Private Ryan" and "Enemy at the Gates". It seems like i've played this game before. Never-the-less, as far as WW2 games go, this one is sure one of the better ones. 4 stars (Fun Game) - I'm still new to the game, but my impression so far is that is an excellent FPS game. However, Counter Strike-Source is the KING! ... Activision :: Bundle (Bundles) :: Collections (Collections) :: Shooters (Shooter) :: Action :: Computer Games :: :: Call of Duty Deluxe Edition
5 stars (A Rookie's First Look At Online Gaming) - When I a little concerned when I read all of the negative comments about Star Wars Galaxies until I recognized a common theme. The people spewing the negative rants were all players who suffered in some way or other from the Combat Upgrade. This was a major sea change in SWG that was aimed at standardizing some areas of the game and eliminating inequities that granted unfair advantages to those who had been exploiting them. Based on my experience, it seemed that the anti-SWG constituency had also had their "oxen gored" by the changes. While I am sympathetic to their plight (although I have little patience with so-called "power gamers" who get caught with their hands in the cookie jar), the post-Combat Upgrade world would be the only SWG that I would ever know. In other words, the game would be what it was when I joined. It's much like the old joke about how many San Francisco 49er fans it would take to change a light bulb? One to install the bulb and three to stand around and talk about how great the old bulb used to be. Once I decided to join, it went as smoothly as I could have ever wanted. Although I had never played an MMORPG, the installation, setup and character creation were a snap. The game graphics are excellent and the theme music by John Williams is excellent. Because of the fluid nature of this type of game, the manual is, by necessity, broadly written and strategy guids are of limited usefullness. Although, there is an excellent in-game Help feature (the Holocron), the very best way to figure out things that have you stumped is to make friends. I admit to becoming very frustrated by undocumented problems until I asked an obviously experienced character for help. He responded with patience and good humor at the dumb rookie questions I threw his way and actually seemed to enjoy helping me along. We have since become good friends in the game and I can always rely on him for a helping hand ... 5 stars (Best original Sim game!) - If you've never experienced a Sim game, this is the place to start! Original and clever it will always be considered a classic! 4 stars (A good game!) - In the Sims Deluxe I liked it better and worse than the regular sims. I liked it better because there were more interesting things to buy and do. I liked it worse because it wasn't as easy as the sims. For example, in THE SIMS I made a boyfriend who was a negative to my sign of the zodiac. But now I have so many things to do. I do recommend this though ;) 1 stars (Dont waste your money) - First, Let me say, the reason I gave this a 1 star rating isnt the game itself, I havent gotten to play it yet! Not from this disc. I ordered it brand new, it was delivered, I unwrapped it, and tried to install it. The serial # EA GAMES printed on it (which you have to have to install it on your computer), is invalid!!!! And, I cant get an answer from their tech support/customer service on this. I have found others who have bought this version with the exact same problem. If you can get this in a jewel case, good. It seems when they come in the case shown on this page, the serial #'s wont work, and you have to go through a huge hassel to get it fixed. ***This is not an amazon problem, it is an EA GAMES problem ... 5 stars (Awesome Game!!!) - This game has all the things to make your dreams of becoming a superhero come true. It also has a great replay value and keeps you playing for many hours. It is great for first timers to the MMO genre. 4 stars (City Of Heroes rocks) - Having owned City Of Heroes since it was released, a hard drive crash and a lost CD sent me hunting for a replacement. The DVD is my default choice when available, and the extra content made it even better. NC Soft keeps adding more and more material to the game with each publish and the bonuses they throw at you during certain holidays and such really make it more enjoyable. I play World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, but I refuse to give up my flying super heroes! Creating characters is almost as much fun as playing them! 1 stars (FORGET IT!) - This seems like a great game and all but I'm NOT going to pay a monthly bill just to play a game, no matter how good it is!I was just thinking about buying this game too.:( ...
