5 stars (Get Ready for Titrations!) - Quantitative Chemical Analysis is a text intended for the first semester of Analytical Chemistry, which is known as Quantitative Analysis at my school. It is a course that is usually required for chemistry, chemical engineering, and biochemistry majors, as well as chemistry minors. This course follows second semeter general chemistry and broadens on the topics covered in that course. It is heavily based on calculations, however the calculations do not require any mathematics beyond basic algebra but do require extensive use of the quadratic formula for equilibrium problems. The book is not visually very impressive because it is in black and white with orange highlights, but this is understandable considering the small market for a text like this one. Chapters 0 - 5 of the text cover introductory material like stoicmetry, error, and statistics, and probably will not be covered in class. Chapters 7 - 25 are the heart of the material for most Quant classes. These chapters can be grouped into a few categories: chemical equilibrium, titrations, electrochemistry, and instrumental techniques such as chromatography and spectrophotometry. The book treats these subjects well and devotes enough material to specific concepts to make the information clear to the reader. Many useful examples and problems are given, and the excellent solutions manuel contains detailed answers to ALL of the problems in the text book. Harris also gives several shortcuts for solving problems. In particular, his explanation of the streamline equation for titration problems was very useful and made these problems much less tedious. He also includes information about topics of interest to biochemistry, and features textboxes about the applications of analytical procedures. I'd say that this is a great text for analytical chemistry. The main problem with a first semester analytical chemistry class is not that the problems are very difficult, it is that they are V... 5 stars (A great book) - At the beggining I hate the S4/IEE term but at the end I loved the book because it has a lot os technical information about statistics as it promises. 5 stars (Comprehensive Six Sigma stats w/ exercises) - I got what I was looking for, a comprehensive statistics book applied in Six Sigma world. It covers everything a SS professional needs to use to be able to successfully solve the vast majority of the statistical problems throughout Six Sigma projects. Excellent book overall! 4 stars (Six Sigma - Breyfogle) - A thorough reference book for Six Sigma and the implementation process. As a beginner, I have found it very dense. It seems to explain everything involved in Six Sigma in great detail, but it does not offer examples, so ought to be supplemented with other reference materials. ... 5 stars (Excellent Text!) - We used this book in a year-long class and it took me a long way. While not specifically a "how to" book, it provides a wealth of information on how to do a code-conforming (and therefore safer) job in about any residential application. The questions at chapter ends and drills that have you draw wiring diagrams will effectively reinforce material read and help you learn how to use the code. A valuable reference and addition to my electrical library! I cannot recommend it strongly enough! 5 stars (The best I have tried.) - This book is my electrical bible. I tried several books before I found this one. I bought it when I was trying to rewire an old house. The first 2 books I bought left me dazed and confused. I finally spent an afternoon in the bookstore browsing through every electrical book I could find until I ran across this. What a find. It not only explains clearly what has to be done, but why. The book makes good use of tables to summarize information and excellent use of diagrams. It not only teaches you to wire correctly, but teaches you the code as well. Highly recommended. If you don't know what a wirenut is, this may not be the book for you as it assumes some level of knowhow on the part of the reader. Otherwise, this is likely to be the last residential wiring book you will ever buy. 4 stars (Dunwoody uses it -- you should too) - I went to Dunwoody Institute, and their electrical department uses this as a textbook for future electricians. The biggest downside is it doesn't cover some of the low voltage/HVAC in the depth that it does everything else. It has constant code references, but it also explains things plainly enough that most people can understand them. It is a little expensive, but I would definately recomend it. ... 5 stars (teacher ed. unexpected) - i was supprised that it was the teachers edition but it will still be usefull thanks 3 stars (This book is better than what some reviewers write!) - This book is written well and is a useful tool to use when writing everything from a resume and cover letter to a complete proposal. It also give instructions on how to make a web page and scripting in html. Although I am sure that this material is very similiar to that of the previous editions, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to write better. I wish that I had not read the previous bad reviews and ordered this book in hardcover instead of a used softcover. 1 stars (Written by an expert in the marketing of textbooks!) - John Lannon was a successful author of a college writing and composition textbook. He then created various spinoffs so that his publisher could cover more markets: business writing, technical writing, and so on (for both college and high school). So he's really not a current specialist in technical writing, and he's not employed as a technical writer. He's just an English instructor who has been using essentially the same basic materials in all his books for decades. This text is a perfect example. It has very little to do with today's field of technical communications. There are many other textbooks that have more specific and up-to-date examples and guidelines for contemporary technical writers. Any book by Hackos, for example, runs circles around this one. In any case, he and his publisher don't need your single-copy sale. They sell thousands of these books for coursewide use at many schools across the country for use in very elementary courses. They don't care about individual users. So save your money and buy something else! ... 5 stars (A college text on Welding) - This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processes you're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills. I own several books on welding and this one blows them all out of the water by a very wide margin. The price is college textbook high, but you get what you pay for with this volume. This is a very professional and well organized reference and should be on every welder's book shelf. The above review is for the fifth edition of this book. Older versions are around but you should purchase the latest edition to keep abreast of new welding practices and techniques. 5 stars (An Excellent, well-written and well organized text) - I have used an earlier edition and this edition in self-study of welding technology and as an aid in the development of my welding skills necessary for certifications. The text is exceptionally well organized and thorough. The material is comprehensive in explaining not only about the various welding technologies, but also in presenting the proper techniques and practices of welding, including great color pictures showing both good and bad practices. Every aspect of the welder's skill set is covered. Additionally, there are comprehensive end-of-chapter review questions, an excellent glossary, and a useful index, which perhaps could be beefed up somewhat. All in all, this was a very readable, worthwhile addition to my metal trades library . My money was well spent. ... 3 stars (Good) - The book is still in good condition. Eventhough there's some black spots in the edge of the book, overall it is fine. 4 stars (For whom want to master the subject!) - This text is not just thorough in its covered material. It covers more material than all other undergrad. level control texts I've ever seen. It treats thoroughly both state-space and the transform approaches which makes this text somehow unique. The text opens your eyes to the P,PI,PD and PID controllers in the very beginning which is thrilling for first time control students. As a matter of fact, the text is more focused on mechanical engineers interests than those of the electrical engineers. I consider the concept itself neutral :) which ECS/EE majors might share with ME(s). As a student you will find the text written in a way that it walks through the concept and practice with you step by step. It teaches you matlab the same way (step by step!). If you are using another text through this course you may use this one as a supplementary text since it covers almost every topic used through the undergraduate level. The multi input multi output system is covered in every control systems text except the fact that none of those I read (more than 5 'big' texts) stated how would you evaluate the values of betas in the B matrix!. Yes, that was no big deal! :) but for me, I always appreciate to see how/where did you get it more than how does the final form look like! As an undergraduate student I would say, you can either use another text and consult this one just in case! or you can get this one and save the other text's money ! 5 stars (Formulas done right) - This book is very good. I really like the way the formulas are given, with all the variables immediatelly defined. When reading it was amazing. As the questions arose in my mind as to what something meant, the next sentence or two satisfied my curiosity. While other books tend claim that a piece of information is "beyond the sc... 5 stars (Excellent book (Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer), price, and quick shipment ) - Book came quickly, exactly as described, better than expected. Look forward to the next purchases. 5 stars (Excellent book) - The book is very useful for students or engineers who want to have a heat and mass transfer book at hand. I am a student and want to find a good book about heat and mass transfer, after buying this book using a discount from coupons-center.com and used it for 3 months, I found this book is very helpful when I am studying. It not only teaches you the basic knowledge, but also list a lot of good examples which are easily understood. I learned a lot from this book. 5 stars (GR8 book for the NOVICE) - This book is one of the best I have ever read for all my courses I had in my ME curriculum. Heat transfer is a very interesting phenomena and I didnt know about it till I was introduced to this courses. All the various modes of heat transfer-conduction,convection and radiation give you a better insight about normal day physics, I shud say..... 5 stars (Useful and valuable ....) - Terrific, easily readable, and highly recommended for tech writers and those learning the craft, as well as for those corporate staff who will work with tech writers. Liked the parts on short reports, long reports, grammar, punctuation, research, graphics, oral presentations, instructions, technical description, and objectives. Did not like the wasted political-correctness (PC) ink devoted to "sexist language," which was unnecessary and does not fit in with the value of the other material in this book. That kind of condescending verbiage detracts from an otherwise superb and useful text. Still valuable for most readers. 5 stars (This really is a good book.) - I learned a lot from this book. 1 stars (Could you make a good even worse?) - There has to be better books than this. Every third word is a contraction. i have no problem with them persay except should we use them all the time? besides the teacher who is teaching my class (Steve Gerson) wrote the book so it seems like a way for him to make money on the side and the ability to make the students use his book. His content on web pages should have been left out because its outated. Overall try not to use this book. ... 4 stars (use a search engine instead of this book?) - This is one of the standard reference texts in telecom. A massive explanation of virtually any term you are likely to encounter in the field. It is a dictionary, not an encyclopedia, so it does not go into any term in any depth. The book has a piquant attraction. Open a page at random and glance through it. Often there are hilarious words and explanations of these. Revealing a droll wit. But aside from that, these days you might prefer to use a search engine for look up quick meanings. 4 stars (Newtons Ok. Certainly the price was right.) - Just finished a Computer Information Systems class and very glad I had Newtons. All of my classmates struggled finding simple defintions such as "JAVA", although I was surprised not to find "People Soft" in it. Made the class a lot easier, and made me walk away from the class with my moneys worth. While www.wikipedia.org just as good (and free), it's not a book is it? Books will be there in 30 years. Where will the ebook in your RAM be in 30 years. 5 stars (If you can have only one telecom book...) - make it this one. Run across an unfamiliar acronym? Wikipedia can't help? 5 stars (Excellent book for college and your career) - Finally, a complete text that is always useful. I have read this book over and over... each time learning something new. It's great if you need a complete and extensive description or a quick overview. This book will go from your college backpack to the desk of your new exciting job! 5 stars (An Excellent Guide to Business Writing) - This book is an excellent tool for writing, especially for the non-native English writer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a study guide with many examples that have been updated for the current business environment. The numerous samples and the grammar review are very helpful for studying the fundamentals. 2 stars (Good Tables) - I have used this book only when I need thermodynamic, physical or chemical data. However the other sections of this book are not practical at all, for those who can read and apply from pure math this is the one; for those looking for practical applications using the information given by this book, sorry fellas this is not the place for it. 3 stars (A must to show the reality) - This is the best book to show how distant are the theory and the practice of a Chemical Engineer. 2 stars (What's all the fuss?) - Perry's has been gathering dust on my bookshelf at home for years. I always think of it as the book to go to if you want to NOT find the answer to something. In my 20 year career and in my PE test effort, the only thing I ever used it for was to look up properties of substances. It is NOT friendly to the working engineer, since it quickly veers into arcane academic territory on every subject, or else is too general to be useful. This is a serious review of this book by a ChE PE, but I know this review will get panned by all, not because it is not useful, but because you do not agree with it. ... 3 stars (A modified "Fundamentals of Building Construction") - This is awfully similar to the book in the title. Even down to the same photos separating the chapters. I'd buy F of BC if I had to choose, since it has so much more material. There's nothing in here that cannot be found in the two other Rob Thallon books. 4 stars (Great book, but overpriced) - I bought this book sight unseen because I also have Rob Thallon's book "Graphic Guide to Frame Construction" and was pretty impressed with it. While "Fundamental of Residential Construction" is a very good book on all aspects of residential construction, there's isn't that much of an improvement on the typical voc-tech textbooks on construction (which are available for less) to make it worth the price. ... 5 stars (THE reference for Designer, Builder, or Student) - Fundamentals of Residential Construction is a welcome update for my reference library. As a residential architect, it is refreshing not to have to wade through irrelevant commercial methodology. This edition is residential specific, but broad-based covering alternative building systems and the most current construction materials. I especially appreciate that it begins with chapters on the context for construction, and the construction and design communities, areas of discussion most often neglected. The well-balanced mix of diagrammatic and photographic details is very helpful. I highly recommend it for both the student and the professional. ... 3 stars (Informative but could be more detailed) - The book is informative and well illustrated. It's written for the professional builder. This book provides more detail than some of the other books I've studied on building construction. However, the book could be more specific about recommended methods and provide more detail. For example, the book describes using joist hangers to install floor joists. It should also suggest that if possible, joist hangers be nailed to the RIM board or beam before the RIM board or beam is installed. 4 stars (Building Construction Illustrated, 3rd Edition by Francis D.
