1 stars (Internet Security) - I cannot install it and cannot even remove it from my computer. And I decided to throw it away. How trrible experience it is. 1 stars (Will not install, no technical support) - I bought Norton Internet Security 2006 2 weeks ago and it will not install. If you can get it to run install, all you get are error messages and it will abort the installation. A call to the technical support and they hung up before I could ask any questions. Needless to say, I think that it is a buggy program and Norton's technical assistance is non-existent.I would not recommend anyone to buy this product. 1 stars (Does not identify virus; no way to notify Symantec of viruses it cannot identify) - I have had an adware virus (Virtumondo)(creator Virtumonde) on my pc for over a month. Symantec can not detect it or remove it. Microsoft AntiSpyware detects it, but is unable to successfully remove it. Symantec has a removal tool for adware.VirtuMonde, but it also cannot detect it to remove this variant. There used to be a means to report (new) virus problems to Symantec, but apparently no more. Their only option is to pay them $39.95 to $69.95 (again) to help you find and remove a virus. I don't have a problem with a solution for a new variant of a virus not being available immediately, but I do after a month and I do with them assuming they know everything and do not need to provide a means to report viruses Symantec cannot detect. I've been a Norton customer for many years; not anymore. ... 1 stars (Please do not buy this product!) - A friend of mine was having trouble with their PC (computer would reboot during startup continually, relatively new PC). After doing a full HD format, XP reinstall (including all updates) everything worked fine. However, after installing Norton 2006 Antivirus the computer slowed down considerably and after two-three startup / shutdown sequences would begin to reboot during startup again (i.e. never get to the Start menu). I reinstalled XP three times (plus did hardware diagnostic checks). Norton 2006 has to have some bugs in it as XP runs fine until Norton 2006 is installed. I concluded that the problem was Norton as I shut off the AV monitoring through msconfig and the computer worked fine. There were no errors when I installed the product. I did a final reformat etc. but put on a competitor's antivirus product and now have no problems at all. I have been using Norton products for 10 years and been working with PC's for over 20. I had installation issues with Systemworks 2005 but stuck with the product. Once I saw the problems with Norton 2006 (thankfully not on my PC) I took Norton off my own computer and switched to something else (with one month left on my subscription). Don't waste your time with this, there are other options that work. 2 stars (AV 2006 intallation and registration problems) - I have installed it, removed it and re-installed it. It finally said the product was activated. but it was not as the subscription was marked as expired before I began. By calling an 800 number I was finally able to get an unlock key and the activation/subscription issue was resolved. It has never managed to register the product key on their server. I tkeeps sayning cant do that now try again later. If you allow it to scan for some of the things other than virus, worms, adware and spyware, it get hung up in scanning the _Restore directory. Some of their earlier products were more user friendly. 5 stars (Works Like A Champ... 1 stars (Norton Internet Security is a complete waste of time & money.) - I purchased Norton and I have always used Norton as my anti-virus and firewall. I purchased Norton (again) last year and will not be renewing my subscription this year. This product is a joke. It completely slows down my laptop without reason (laptop is a high end IBM), it sends out a million messages for no apparent reasons and keeps asking to be un-installed and re-installed because one function or another is not working. Symantec really need to fix this software or lose all their customers. 2 stars (The anti-virus component might be OK, but the rest is buggy.) - Norton anti-virus at some point was the best anti-virus program, then it started going down hill and especially when they bundled this other useless (trash-ware) Internet security components. I am an above average computer user. This product is not worth the money. It is probably best to spend the money on just the anti-virus alone if that is still any good. When I installed this program it slowed down my 550 MHz system. If I try to send an email with an attachment it timed out (poor programing) because it scans the outgoing mail and it is also supposed to "train" its anti-spam engine, which is by the way useless, a simple OE filter catches more spam than it ever hopes to. I have DSL so it is not a bandwidth or timeout issue like Symantec would like you to believe, it is simply that Norton acts as the mail server for your email client but acts less than that due to poor or incomplete programing. Symantec's website is not much help on this big defect in the program. The solution that I discovered after days of trial and error is to disable the scanning of the outgoing email all together, this applies to the email scanning of outgoing messages and the filtering/training in the anti-spam options (so much for paying the extra for the Internet security features that have to be disabled in most cases unless you are just sending ... 1 stars (Can I take back the 1 star...) - This is one of the worst applications that I have ever used. Please do not buy it. I seriously doubt the authenticity of many of the positive reviews. Based on my own experience, conversations with other computer professionals, and my reading of hundreds of online complaints, I suspect that at least some of these are shills for Symantec. I bought a 3-user Home Protection Pack. I am not an amateur -- I develop Windows and web applications for a living. However, I have not been able to successfully install and use this product on any of the three machines that I bought it for. The only fully working copy gave out yesterday for no apparent reason. It just simply quit working. The error message that pops up when I try to start it indicates that I should uninstall/reinstall -- doing so twice has not remedied the situation. The various problems that I have had are too numerous to explore in detail, but they include: - Installation issues (all three machines); - Problems getting the auto-update functionality to work (two of the three machines never did); - The Auto-Protect icon indicates that it is running, but the software will not load at all (one machine); - Persistant false positive, even after running Symantec's removal tool for the supposed infection (one machine); - Missed adware/spyware infections (two of the machines). I am uninstalling Norton and getting something else, probably Trend Micro's AV suite. 3 stars (HAVE USED THIS VERSION FOR 5 MONTHS I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS BUT IS MUCH BETTER THAN THEIR 2006 VERSIONS) - I HAVE NORTON 2005 ON TWO COMPUTERS .I HAVE HAD ERROR MESSAGES LOAD ERRORS AND SEVERAL MACHINE CRASHES BUT THE PROGRAM WORKS GREAT.I NEVER KNOW WHEN NORTON WILL ASK TO VERIFY MY SUBCRIPTION KEYS OR YOUR FREE TRIAL IS UP. 1 stars (Installation Nightmare - Try V-Com's Systemsuite Instead) - I'm still trying to install this software. There are about 7 technotes on the Symantec website dealing with installation problems for this software, as well as Personal Firewall. You better read them all before you even try, I say try, to install this stuff. Count on problems if you have a prior version that you are going to remove and upgrade. I've been working on installing this for about 4 hours, and one time I crashed the computer trying to implement one of Symantec's fixes -- spent 2 days trying to revive it, gave up and restored the hard drive with a backup image. Over the years, this software has become more bloated and problematic. Symantec has been complacent about product quality. Better bet is SystemSuite Pro 6 by V-com. I've been running version 5 for a year on another computer and it works very well, not a resource hog, only a few minor problems that V_com helped me fix. I installed Version 6 on my brother's computer with no problem at all. 1 stars (Big Headache!) - I've been using Norton's Systems Works and Firewall for years and have been very happy with them up till now. Already 2004's versions gave me problems and I could not install easily. I had constant automatic shut downs. Tech help was WORTHLESS! I finally had to reformat my computer and then everything worked fine. Now 2005's version is even worse. I could not install either Systems Works or the Firewall without my computer constantly shutting down during install. Finally, I had to do their fix of completely deleting all remenants of any Norton products. I did a reinstall of SW and my computer did not shut down, but not everything installed. I also managed to get the firewall installed as well. But since then, I've had constant problems again with my computer shutting down and then reboot problems when I try to run antivirus, or other Norton applications. I also keep getting error messages that some file is missing.... 1 stars (A Nightmare!) - Would not install (non-stop errors). Continually showed "disabled" (I'd enable it on the menu and the icon would only show "disabled"). Crashed my other software. Support is NONEXISTENT! (They have the nerve to charge $30.00 for technical support- per incident- for help with the garbage they've sold you. Perhaps the only way to actually get help but they weren't getting another dime out of me) I can't believe what's happened with this company. Three years ago it was all we used in our offices (and me at home). Honestly, this has been the worst experience I've ever had with any software. My other four computers have McAfee (no problems). One came with Norton AntiVirus preinstalled so I purchased the (same) firewall. Needless to say they BOTH went! Never again! Just hearing the word "Norton" gives me hives- 1 stars (Unusable) - My new Dell came with this pre-installed. It kept crashing until I removed Norton Personal Firewall, it hasn't crashed since. A client just called, they installed NPF on their computers and killed their entire office network. I'm off to fix that now. 1 stars (Poorly documented, extremely unstable, impractical.) - I'll try and stay fairly objective about this. It will be difficult. I installed this on a brand spanking new Win2K SP4 machine. Here is what I've experienced. 1. Poor to no support documentation for this product, either included or on their web site. 2. Default security policy is not adequate. I've installed server apps that the wizard interface said were reccomended safe, which I know darned well aren't. ( therefore requiring rule customization for the apps to work correctly) 3. Adding even basic firewall rules crashes this product, HARD. 4. Does not play well with others, when it does crash, it can 't be shut down or restarted with the task manager, causing a REQUIRED reboot. 5. I have crashed IE and had this product crash queitly without any alert, leaving my box exposed on the net... 5 stars (No problems with the install or the registration/activation) - Today,I upgraded from Systemworks 2003 Professional Edition to the Systemworks 2005 Premier on a PC with Windows XP Home Edition. It took approximately 30 minutes to load and register and everything went smoothly. Before starting, I read every review written here at Amazon so I'm well aware that my experience is not typical. I am offering the following suggestions in hopes that it may help someone who still has not been able to get it loaded or is about to try loading it for the first time. 1. First, to install this product on a XP machine, Norton says your processor should be a minimum of 300mhz (they neglect to tell you this on the outside of the box when they list the Minimum Systen Requirements) 2. Your Internet Explorer should be updated to version 6 3. If you have an earlier version of Systemworks (from 2003 and up) on your PC, don't uninstall it - if your version is earlier than 2003, you Must uninstall it before loading the new one. 4. Close all other Window programs - including those running in the System Tray. 5. Put in the Norton CD and click on "Install Norton SystemWorks" when the first panel comes up. 6. You'll be asked to accept the License Agreement" and then to enter your Product Key (it's long - 24 characters - and it appears on the back of your CD sleeve). 7. You're advised next to do a virus scan - so just click the "Start Scan" 8. It then asks you to select an Installation Type - the most trouble free choice here is the default - "Install Now". 9. Next, the software picks a folder where it wants to install the program...but, it gives you the ability to click "Browse" and change to another folder location. Again, the most trouble free choice here is the default. 10.It will then suggest that you Restart windows....then you are Done with the install (you still must register and activate). 11. At this point, after the Windows restart, I did get a couple of error me... 1 stars (A Disgrace) - Symantec has disgraced itself by selling what they must know is a terribly flawed product. Don't waste your money. After uninstalling, I installed Roboform, which is an excellent product. 1 stars (Make sure to try this before buying it!!!) - FREE TRIAL: First of all, let me say there is a free 15-Day trial of this program on Symantec's website...try it before you buy it. On to the review: This isn't worth it. You have very little control over your passwords once you enter them into the program. After entry, you will never see your actual password again...good luck remembering them to use on a different computer. Ignoring the bad features and annoyances...this program didn't work on 3 out of the 7 websites I tried it on! That's nearly half! Stay Away! 5 stars (Norton Password Manager) - Just what I needed to manage umpteen paswords for financial and other websites. Also, the passwords can be made as complex as you like so that accounts are secure. This also makes it easy to change passwords frequently. ... 4 stars (Norton Antivirus purchase) - I like the product. But Norton Antivirus, Symantec did not except my rebate offer and indicated my original receipt which was an Amazon receipt was not valid. I will not purchase from Symantec again. 5 stars (No problems) - I don't understand the amount of negative feedbacks out there, but it seems there are a lot of Symantec/Norton bashers, yet Symantec products (at least virus protection ones) continue to be the best sellers among retailers, computer manufacturers, and large companies. I have been using computers since 1996, by all means a novice, and started out initially with McAfee upon everyone's recommendations. It always seemed to require too much user input, and not knowing much comupter anti virus lingo, I kept having all sorts of problems (Freezing, pop-ups for McAfee sale pitches, errors, excessive prompts for specific actions, and YES viruses, with very poor customer service). When I bought my second computer (IBM) in early 2000, it came with Norton pre-installed, and what a difference! I never had to do anything to the software. It just worked in the background, and never had a problem. I have been a Norton/Symantec fan since. Every year, I purchase and upgrade to the new software, simply because it is free after rebates, instead of paying to renew my subscription. I tried one year the NIS, and it did slow my computer, so I went back to the NAV. We have 3 desktop and 3 laptop computers, running W98, ME and XP. Never had a problem with viruses, and all computers have Norton running just smoothly in the background. Never had any problems with installation, and the current 3 users pack was even easier, because it automatically uninstalled the prior versions (Norton Professional 2003 and 2004). It updates itself automatically, and simply works (you just don't even know it is working). Not one single computer had a virus in over 5 years. I still have my IBM Aptiva, W98, 550MHZ Athlon, and an older 450MHZ Celeron Toshiba... 5 stars (GET THIS PROGRAM!) - well my norton expired.... so i was trying a free antivirus and free anti spyware... well the day after i quit using norton my computer started acting horrible... i could be surfing the net and a window would open out of nowhere..... i KNEW i had something... but my antivirus i was using didn't show anything up... so i bought this.... ya it cost a bit.. but after the rebates it wasnt bad at all.. and i installed this and had not even scanned yet, and norton had found a trojan on my puter 22 times.. that was without even scanning yet!!! needless to say.. got rid of that trojan, and my computer has worked better than it had in ages every since.. i would recommend this to ANYONE!! buy it NOW!! I LOVE IT! 1 stars (What a disapointment) - I've used Norton for many, many years and have always sworn by it as the best anti-virus protection available on the market. With the 2003 version, I switched to Norton Internet Security and loved it. It's always worked perfectly, and I've bought a new year of definitions each year. I planned to update my NIS 2003 version again this year when it expired, but about a month before the expiration, I got an offer from Symantec to buy the NIS 2005 Antispam version for a low price. I decided to go ahead and upgrade from 2003 to 2005 at the low price. Last weekend my subscription to NIS 2003 expired, so instead of re-subscribing, I instead downloaded and installed the NIS 2005 version. That's when the problems started. After downloading and installing, I updated the virus definitions. This went fine, and I thought I was through with it. A while later I went into the NIS program and when I opened it up, only part of the screen appeared--the border, without the middle with all the buttons to click. It did this everytime I opened the program, so I decided to reinstall the program. After restalling and updating the definitions, again I thought I was through. 1 stars (Norton STINKS) - I had Norton Internet Security installed on my computer when bought new 10 months ago. Shortly after running the computer it gradually slowed down and would not load things, freeze up etc...I thought my computer was messed up and after some trial and error, I discovered that Norton was causing my problems. I installed Computer Associates EZ trust software (which I use on my Windows XP laptop that did not experience any problems) and deleted Norton and my problems ceased. I WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND THIS PROGRAM!!! I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who have no problem, but judging by the number of negative reviews here that they are the minority. 5 stars (Norton Internet Security 2005) - Great protection, installed easier than 2003 and 2002 versions. This product has saved our PC's many times. wsp 1 stars (who would be dumb enough to buy this crap?) - I would not use this product even if symantec pays me to use it. 5 stars (Way Better Than Trend Micro PC-Cillin) - I was using Trend Micro PC-Cillin and kept having viruses. I could not figure out why until I read an article in PC World that told that Trend does not detect or remove spyware/adware. Knowing that viruses can come in with spyware/adware I realized that my problem was in part the protection I bought. Taking a friend's advice who sets up computer systems and networks them for a living I bought the stand alone Norton Bundle of Anti Virus and Personal Firewall. I must say I have never been more pleased than I have with Norton. It has kept me protected solidly and I feel it was worth every penny and do not forsee ever switching again. Being told by a co worker i was not smart to have switched from Trend I decided to double check some of Norton's scan reports by doing the free scan at the trend site and the program that before was telling me i had all these viruses was now backing up what Norton told me and saying i was totally clean. Go figure. It might be not as easy to install or use as Trend claims to be but when you want computer protection you want SOLID protection not just the easiest thing to use. 1 stars (Buggy and tech support is virtually non-existent.) - Buggy buggy buggy! On one computer, I can only get NPF to load on 1/3 of all boots (warm or cold). On my other computer, the central (yet separate) updating program -- Symantec LiveUpdate -- automatically CHANGES its connectivity options ITSELF nearly every day, which causes the "LiveUpdate settings" to become "corrupt," making updating either NPF or NAV impossible unless. . . . One goes through a cumbersome process of scanning the entire hard drive(s) for LiveUpdate's configuration settings, removes them manually, goes to the control panel to reconfigure NEW settings, and then reboots. This works (temporarily) to fix the problem, but it takes about 10 minutes. Do that 10-12 times per week, and you can imagine the frustration factor. Periodically, this ...
