5 stars (Neurology of emotions) - This book does an excellent job of explaining how the brain is overpowered by emotions. You also learn that if you are in an extreme state of emotional arousal, your rational ability is impaired. To deal with emotions, I strongly recommend Rosalene Glickman's book, Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self and the Optimal thinking emotional mastery wallet cards. In the Optimal thinking resources, you receive a clear explanation of each emotion, why they are caused and how to be deal with each troublesome emotion. You are provided with questions to understand and resolve them. Both of these books are excellent. 4 stars (Good overview of how emotions affect - and sometimes rule - our lives) - I suppose I was first interested in this book, which has been around quite some time now, by the often quoted assertion that emotional intelligence - EQ - is now more important to career development and job performance than IQ. What I found was a good explanation of how humans are affected and sometimes governed by their emotions. The book is one of an interesting genre - popular social science, a bit like the work of Malcolm Gladwell - and I must admit it had me gripped to start with. By the end of the book, I was a bit over it, because it tends to look at how EQ can be boosted in kids and obviously being a fully-grown adult I was interested to know how I could boost my own EQ and in doing so boost my chances of early promotion, unfathomed success and early retirement. The book is pretty good at explaining the process of emotional reactions and I love the phrase "emotional hijacking" - when our emotions take over. I suppose the real value in this book is understanding as a whole how your brain works and what exactly your emotions are. If this has contributed anything to my quality of life, it is probably the realisation of how emotions follow patterns and how simple facial gestures, such as rolling your eyes, can trigger an adverse r... 4 stars (Great book! ) - This book is very well written and will keep your interest. The book covers some very important facets of leadership mainly: integrity, ethics, trust, and other peoples feelings. If you are reading this review and you don't really know why those factors are keystones to leadership then this book would be a good addition to your leadership skills. If leadership were a pie this book would be several slices but not the whole pie. For an in-depth look at leadership read the army field manual for leadership. 5 stars (Primal Leadership) - The book by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Anne Mc Kee is a wonderful study on all modern leadership styles, and how to learn how to lead with Emotional Intelligence. Several cases are presented, on worldwide and US companies, providing us with the best and thorough analysis on how to achieve the highest performance, by focusing on the diverse aspects of Emotional Intelligence. I believe it is a must for top executives, managers and counsellors from Organizations, and for all of those seeking to improve their emotional skills, be them focused on job or on life improvement. 2 stars (Too stretching) - I really liked Dan Goleman's previous books on Emotional Intelligence (EI). Goleman's article on "Primal Leadership" appeared in Harvard Business Review (HBR) a few years ago. His book version of primal leadership is a little too stretching. If you are not keen on reading the not-so-interesting details, I would recommend the article version in HBR, which gives a very good synopsis of the book. ... 2 stars (Disappointing, again and again...) - I am a clinical psychology graduate student, and every time I turn to this book for help related to interpretation--what a part of the test means or can tell us about a person--I am sorely disappointed. It is terribly psychometric and formal, giving facts about the test but few clues for what to do with it; even something as simple as a useful description of one of the index scores is lacking. There are reference tables included, but I have found even those more difficult to locate when I need them than seems necessary. Frustrating... 5 stars (Clear and user-friendly yet sophisticated) - This is a gem of a book. I assigned it for the grad students in my intellectual assessment course and both they and I found it to be very helpful and easy to use. The format of the book makes it very user-friendly and unintimidating. There are a lot of boxes and highlighted text that help the reader to find what he or she is looking for quickly. This book covers administration, scoring, and interpretation and provides numerous helpful tips for beginners on common errors. The approach to interpretation provided in this book is a pared-down and slightly modified version of the method described in Kaufman's book Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III (an excellent book with a great deal of information on interpreting the WISC-III). Kaufman and Lichtenberger take the guess work and estimation out of interpreting the significance of various scores. This approach is based in the scientific method (assume nonsignificance unless you have a compelling reason, based on the test data, to believe that the variations in scores on the test protocol are unlikely to have resulted by chance). This approach is very helpful in giving students an understanding of how much variation in test scores can result from test error, and brings the "science" back into test interpretation.
